I used to have the same problem with my 760CD whenever I dialed a 28.8 modem at
the other end (I had no problem when I dialed a 14.4 number). When I called
the IBM
help line about it, they said the problem must either be with the remote modem
or
with my phone line and there was no problem with the mwave modem inside my
760.
I tried to explain it to them that I had never had any problem when I used my
other
(US Robotics) modem to dial the same number, but they were not convinced. When
I told
them I was usually running Netscape when I encountered this problem (modem
dropping connection), they said IBM doesn't support Netscape! Seriously, they
tried to put the
blame on Netscape.

Anyway, eventually I figured out that my machine had an older version of the
mwave
driver and downloading a new version (I think it was version 2.11) from
http://www.pc.ibm.com/ solved my problem. If only their tech support people
had
suggested this in the first place, it would have saved my so much time and
energy!

So, if you are having problems with your mwave modem, I strongly suggest you
find out
if there is a new mwave driver available for your particular model of thinkpad
and
see if that fixes your problem.
