When the end of my adapter broke the first time, they sent me a new end to
replace it with. They also suggested that I call up the Parts department
and buy a few extra to have on hand, so I would be able to avoid any
"down" time while waiting for a replacement in the future. I
procrastinated, and when I needed to call for a similar problem a few
months later, they told me that they'd re-engineered the adapter and
swapped the whole thing with me. This one looks almost identical, but the
end piece doesn't snap off (at least, not as easily), and is a single
molded piece of plastic. I don't expect it to be breaking!
BTW, the reason I was given for the ease with which that part breaks off
is that it is intentional, to avoid damage to the ThinkPad if someone
trips over the power cord. While I have no reason to doubt this, I suspect
that a desire to have a single AC adapter with two different DC ends also
had something to do with it. Of course, the question of why the ThinkPad
line would require different DC ends is still one of those unanswered
mysteries of life.
