other vendors' hard drives

What experience have y'all had with HD's from external vendors?  I have a
701 CS with the 360 HD (not enough) and am looking to buy another one from
a non-IBM source.  I know that it's not supported by IBM, but will it
work?  Do I need some special adapter or should it just fit into the
plastic case that the current one's in?  And are those plastic cases
available anywhere?
