One thing to try in cases like this is to add the 'linear' option to
the globals section of your lilo.conf. I can't tell you why it might
work - i'm not sure i understand what it does, despite the explanation
in the user manual - but it may work, nonetheless.
Failing this, the user manual (/usr/doc/lilo*/doc/ in some
distributions, or search the net if you haven't got it around) does
detail how to interpret various lilo behaviors. Eg, getting just LI
is supposed to mean:
The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage
boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be
caused by a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters) or by
moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer.
Failing both, you might want to try loadlin from a small dos
partition, if you have your machine set up for both dos and linux.
I've used it a few times - loadlin seems to be less touchy than lilo,
though more kludgy since you're running a kernel from the dos
partition...
Hope this helps!
