RE: External CD-ROM Recommendations?

i had an nec multispin 3xp scsi cd-rom (3x) connected via new media's
bustoaster pcmcia card to my thinkpad 755ce. worked fine for the most part.

the power source was a little wall mounted ac/dc converter - mine was 240v;
if i wanted to use it in the u.s. i would have had to buy a 110 ac/dc adapter.
wouldn't have been that expensive but i would have preferred an 'intelligent'
power source.

unfortunately, alas, my 3xp was stolen in a buglary and i am just getting
around to replacing it. the replacement - due in tomorrow - is a

  nec 8xe scsi-2 multispin cd-rom (external, 8x speed),

with i am told the same kind of ac/dc adapter.

it is not a particularly portable unit (neither was the 3xp), but i can use
it with both my 755ce and my mac, and by the time i travel next i hope to
have a notebook with a built in cd-rom.

the new media bustoaster pcmcia card, i understand, is one of the few that
linux supports.

there is no clear choice for portable cd-rom drives. the panasonics and
sonys have great form factors, but who wants to pay that much for such
a slow speed (these days), a proprietary pcmcia card, and a unit that will
work with pc *or* mac (not both)?

regards, al
