Thinkpad 760ED + Win3.1 + MPEG = :(

When booting up Windows 3.1 on the 760ED, the splash screen comes up,
disappears (so far so good), and then a DOS message comes up in
German:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                                IBMMPEG

Das MPEG-Subsystem kann nicht verwendet weden, weil es inaktiviert
ist.

                                          Press any key to continue
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes the system hangs at this point, sometimes it doesn't
(continuing into the Windows desktop), but it eventually hangs.
Trying to play MPEGs results in a IRQ conflict message. I have
exhausted the capabilities of the IBM multimedia support group and now
this problem is being forwarded to development! This despite the fact
that the problem still existed *after* wiping the machine and using
IBM's pre-load CD for Windows 3.1 on the 760ED!

I am writing this for a number of reasons:

1) Are there any other 760ED/Windows 3.1 users out there who have had
this problem and were you able to resolve it?

2) Out of curiosity, can anyone translate this message?

3) I get the sneaking impression from IBM that their Windows 3.1
drivers have some chinks to be worked out...

4) IBM won't let me ship the system back, because "it could be a
software problem". There's a decent chance it is, but we're out in
the cold, hoping that some engineers find time to look at this
problem...I say hoping because IBM can't guarantee when the
development engineers will get around to looking at this.

Thanks. Just needed a shoulder to cry on. Write me if you have any
ideas. Now, on with business.
