701C/560D suspend/resume happy ending
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Howdy-
Many moons ago I troubled the esteemed members of this list because my
701C was having problems coming out of suspend mode in Win95 (it would hang
and force me to kill msgsrv32). I wound up spending considerable amount of
time on the phone both to IBM (less than helpful, eventually wanted me to
pay $35) and Microsoft. Not even the Borg could solve my problem. They
finally came up with a workaround (removing all power management
drivers--power.drv & *vpowerd from system.ini). I eventually became
resigned to the notion I would have to live without APM and just use the
BIOS suspend/resume mode.
Recently my boss' new 560D started having the same problem. Since it came
pre-loaded with Win95, I thought that maybe IBM would be more willing to
deal with the problem (or more experienced), since it felt like an icky
BIOS incompatability.
IBM's first level of support was really annoying (lack of knowledge, lack
of experience, etc). Eventually I got punted over to OS, where I waited on
hold for that engineer to chat with his "Lead Product Support" engineer
(i.e. the people who have full-fledged clues, I guess). He eventually came
back with something that lead me to the right answer.
He suggested that the problem was actually with my Xircom Ethernet+Modem
28.8 adapter driver. He was told that the drivers might not have been
32-bit, and hence failed to reinit the card after a suspend. He
recommended I talk to Xircom. This information seemed to be heading close
to the mark since Xircom drivers are one of the shared traits between my
701C and this new 560.
I downloaded new drivers (just released 8-26-96) for both models of cards
(I have a IIps) from their web site (www.xircom.com) and installed them
with some skepticism. The install/debug directions on the Xircom site are
actually quite good.
Much jubilation resulted when this fixed the problem on the 560. I just
installed a new driver on the 701C (tip:you may need the Win95 CD or floppy
distribution you used for install in addition to the driver you download)
and it is working like a champ.
Moral of story: If you have problems with resuming from suspend mode and
use a Xircom net/modem card, you may wish to try installing the new
drivers. It made my day, and it may make yours.
Peace,
dNb
