How to get 800x600 in DOS on 760ED?

I'm looking for a way on my 760ED LCD Display under DOS
(NOT Windows) to get 800x600 full screen resolution. I understand
that with some Thinkpads at least, the "ps2" utility accomplishes
this with "ps2 mode3x on". The "mode3x" option does not
appear on the 760ED "ps2 ?" option list, BUT if one
does "ps2 ? mode3x", he sees that the mode is OFF
(and he sees that the description of mode3x is exactly
what he wants). If one tries "ps2 mode3x on" he gets OK
from the utility -- BUT THEN if he does "ps2 ? mode3x",
it still shows OFF AND the mode is still obviously 640x480
on the LCD.

I have Version 3.32 of ps2.exe.

I'm in this game because what I really want to do is boot
LINUX from DOS with loadlin, since LINUX won't set the LCD
registers to 800x600. If I can do it in DOS, then I can
set 800x600 modes under X in LINUX and really get 800x600.

Using HVexp under ps2 does get me a full screen, but it's
a 640x480 full screen for both DOS and LINUX.

Surely there is some way to do this with a DOS ap from somewhere.
Does anyone have any leads???????????????
