Christian,
The overriding factor which effects speed when running WinNT on *ANY*
platform is RAM availability. Where running Win95 on more than 32 Megs is
pretty fruitless as it doesn't get used, I can say from vast experience that
NT really isn't worth running on anything with LESS than 32 Megs. In fact I
reccomend a RAM platform of at least 64 Megs to anyone who really wants to
see speed from NT... I run NT 4.0 Workstation on a P-133 with 80 Megs of RAM
and about 9 Gigs formatted NTFS. It's PLENTY fast. In point of fact, this
particular arrangement is faster than the P6-Pro-200 with 48 Megs of RAM
that I put together a couple of weeks ago, which strongly suggests that RAM
is the bigger issue.
Bottom line: WinNT is a memory hog. It always has been, but if you can
afford the RAM, it's a hell of an O/S. I'll stick to Win95 on my 755cx
because I do most of my speed sensitive work on my destop anyway, and '95
still makes a pretty good client to my NT machine. When I decide to
shoehorn a 32 Meg card into the 'Pad I'll think about putting NT on it, but
not until then.
