I recall reading on comp.periph.scsi that most modern disks are
designed to run fine in every conceivable drive orientation except
upside-down (including partially upside-down at an angle) so long
as the orientation stays the same during use. Using a disk in
an upside-down orientation results in extra stress on the bearing
mechanisms, causing a shorter disk life. I do not know if this
is actually true.
You should note that some IDE/EIDE drives may appear upside-down
when they in fact are not. EIDE 3.5" disks sometimes had the PCB on
top of the casing as opposed to the bottom like on SCSI disk.
