Overview

The new ThinkPad(R) 760E or ED -- with its large 12.1-inch (measured
diagonally) XGA(R) (1024 x 768) TFT display and the styling of the
tilted keyboard with built-in palm rest -- introduces you to IBM's
latest edition of the ThinkPad 760 family. Add to that a fast
Pentium 133MHz(1) or 150MHz(1) processor both with L2 cache, full PCI
architecture, large-capacity hard disk storage (maximum of 2.1GB(2)
with one hard disk drive (HDD) and much more storage with an optional
second HDD), media processor (MWAVE(R) Digital Signal Processor
(DSP)), dual infrared (IR) transceivers, 64K color support, highly
functional ThinkPad Ultrabay(TM), and preinstalled Microsoft Windows+
95 plus selected applications -- you have everything you need, and
more, in a compact, light-weight notebook.

These new ThinkPad models emphasize faster performance and advanced
function. This function includes the integrated media processor
(MWAVE DSP) providing stereo audio support, .WAV and MIDI audio
support, integrated (up to 28.8 Kbps) data/fax modem support,
full-feature telephony support (speakerphone and telephone answering
machine), and a slide volume control. Additional function also
includes integrated IR for wireless data/file transfer. System
memory is a base of 16MB and can be expanded to 104MB using ThinkPad
Proven(TM) vendor optional memory. The 760E systems can be upgraded
with an optional CD-ROM at any time to increase their functionality.

Consider the ThinkPad 760ED with Pentium 133MHz system solution if
you need more advanced and integrated multimedia capability --
CD-ROM, audio, and video combined. The integrated, removable 6X
CD-ROM drive (150/900 Kbps), Total Image Video(TM) with MPEG-1 and
MPEG-2 Half Horizontal Resolution (HHR) support, stereo speakers,
TheaterSound (MIDI Wave Table Audio), and other features make the
ThinkPad 760ED MPC-2 compliant, setting it apart from less integrated
multimedia competitive systems.

The 760E or 760ED system combined with any one of the five IBM
docking solutions can easily become your primary personal computer,
providing an alternative to a desktop system unit.

The ThinkPad 760E/ED models have been thoroughly tested to ensure
support of, and compatibility with, the OS/2(R) Warp 4 operating
system. Refer to Software Announcement 296-375, dated
September 24, 1996, for detailed information about OS/2 Warp 4.

Keyboard and TrackPoint III(TM): The keyboard has the familiar
layout of a ThinkPad with a function key capability that allows you
to quickly access system functions, such as power management control.
The keyboard tilts to a comfortable angle for typing when the system
is opened, and there is a palm-rest area. If desired, you can adjust
the keyboard to have no tilt. The keyboard lifts up allowing access
to the UltraBay and the floppy disk drive (FDD), HDD, and battery for
quick upgrades or battery changes. The TrackPoint III "drag and
drop" function of the click buttons is enhanced. You can lock and
hold the buttons in without continuously pushing on them.

Processor: Depending on the model, these systems have a Pentium
150MHz or a Pentium 133MHz processor with L2 cache and floating-point
decimal providing exceptional performance. All models have L2 cache.

Memory: The ThinkPad 760E/ED systems are designed to use new
144-pin, 64-bit EDO SO DIMM, 3 V, non-parity memory. The system
comes standard with 16MB RAM. System memory can be expanded up to
80MB without removing existing memory parts. Memory expansion to
104MB using ThinkPad Proven vendor memory requires the removal of the
existing Memory Module Adapter and any memory modules that are on it
and replacing the adapter with the vendor Memory Module Adapter that
contains 96MB of memory.

PCI Bus: PCI bus supports 32-bit transfers for faster performance.

PCMCIA: The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two
Type II, or one Type III PC card. The slot will support the new
CardBus(4) PC card, when available. If additional PCMCIA cards are
required, the optional ThinkPad PCMCIA cartridge can be placed in the
ThinkPad 760 family UltraBay, providing an additional Type III slot.

(4) Presently available in DOS and Windows 3.1 only.

IBM PC Card Director software is preinstalled. This software makes
simple work of installing many PCMCIA cards, allowing you to simply
plug in the card and use it.

PC Card Director with Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver: PC
Card Director helps you get status and information on PCMCIA cards
installed in the system. In addition, on OS/2 and on Microsoft
Windows, PC Card Director can register an application program for
PCMCIA cards and execute them automatically.

Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver enables supported PCMCIA
cards by sensing them automatically. PCMCIA cards supported by Auto
Configurator and Memory Device Driver are listed in the Compatibility
and Supported Products section.

Storage: The customer-removable, customer-installable hard drive is
2.1GB standard. The drive is easily removed by lifting up the
keyboard. You can have multiple "systems" simply by installing a
different hard drive. Systems can also be shared by users who have
their own hard drive but no ThinkPad system unit. A 1.44MB FDD comes
standard.

ThinkPad UltraBay: The ThinkPad UltraBay, also standard with the
system, is an intelligent bay that switches its pinout signals to
allow the installation of an FDD, PCMCIA cartridge, second Li-Ion
battery, HDD, or CD-ROM in what would normally be just the FDD bay.
The installation of a second hard drive requires the ThinkPad Second
HDD Adapter optional feature.

The 760ED comes with a 12 cm CD-ROM, 6X-speed (150/900 Kbps), in the
ThinkPad UltraBay instead of the diskette drive. The FDD is shipped
with the system.

The ThinkPad 760E systems can be upgraded with an optional CD-ROM at
any time to increase their functionality.

Media Processor (MWAVE DSP): The MWAVE MDSP2780 operates at up to 60
million operations per second for integrating audio, games, music,
data/fax modem, and telephony into a DSP. Features and benefits
include:

o 44.1KHz MPC-2 16-bit audio with real-time compression

o Simultaneous audio play and record

o Digital audio mixing with up to eight open .WAV sources

o General MIDI-compatible, 32-voice wavetable synthesizer

o Sound Blaster support

o Up to 28.8 Kbps data/fax modem(3)

o Full-featured telephone(3)

   - Answering machine with variable speed message playback and
      voice compression

   - Hands-free, full-duplex speakerphone

This features set can be enhanced simply by upgrading the DSP
software.

Audio: The audio capability on the system board and the integrated
microphone allow voice annotation and audio capability. The system
is equipped with audio in/out jacks for stereo speakers, headphone,
or external microphone. A separate slide volume control is located
to the rear of the keyboard on the system.

Video: The new models of the ThinkPad 760E system have PCI bus
support with video acceleration, providing exceptional video
performance and have 2MB of video RAM. The 760ED also has enhanced
video that supports video-in and video-out (NTSC/PAL), video capture,
hardware video acceleration, scaling, and color space conversion, in
addition to 2MB of video RAM.

Total Image Video with MPEG-2 Half Horizontal Resolution: The 760ED
system has support for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 HHR video decoding for
significantly improved video performance.

Infrared: The systems have IR transceivers in front and back for
wireless file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 760
family is designed for compliance with the Infrared Data Association
(IrDA) IR data link specification Version 1.0. The system supports
three modes of operation:

o IBM mode (from 576 Kbps to 1.15 Mbps)
o HP mode (from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps)
o Sharp mode (9600 bps)

Preinstalled software provides wireless file transfer, file
synchronization, and clipboard data transfer. With the IR feature,
data can be exchanged with the following systems by using the
following vendor software packages:

Compatibility and Supported Products

Refer to the 9546 Sales Manual pages or contact your IBM
representative for a list of supported features and options and
compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is updated
periodically.

The ThinkPad 760 family of systems is designed to be compatible with
the PS/2(R). The ThinkPad 760 family systems contain BIOS, Easy
Setup, and Diagnostics in their Flash ROM and also provide a GUI to
set up the system and power management features for OS/2 and Windows
users. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces
designed to support the standard features of the ThinkPad 760 family
systems and to maintain compatibility with many software programs
currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the IBM PC family.

Limitations

Enhanced Video and MPEG Restrictions

o When using Windows 3.1 and an MPEG file is loaded through the IBM
SelectaDock I SCSI or to a network through a PCI card, two PCI
   IRQs need to be assigned.

o When using Windows NT 3.51 and a low-speed SCSI device, such as a
CD-ROM, is attached to the IBM SelectaDock I SCSI, an error occurs
at start up or when the media is changed. A new driver from
Adaptec (AIC78xx.SYS) will fix this problem.

o Video capture/overlay/MPEG playback functions not supported are:

   - 1024 x 768 256 color 75Hz in OS/2 Warp only.

   - 1024 x 768 65,536 color 75Hz.

   - All 16 color modes.

   - All 1280 x 1024 modes (in OS/2 Warp only).

   - Virtual screen mode (such as 800 x 600 on a television or 1024
      x 768 on an LCD).

   - MPEG-2 HHR PAL format clips cannot be played back regardless of
      operating system.

   - When using MPEG, CD-i Interactive is not supported.

   - When using OS/2 Warp, some CD-i CDs cannot be played.

   - Simultaneous use of MPEG and MWAVE DSP modem is not supported.

   - In OS/2 Warp, session switch operation between a full-screen
session and an OS/2 Presentation Manager(R) session is not
      supported on a television.

   - In OS/2 Warp, the video capture may be further restricted by
system configuration, for example, system memory size, screen
      resolution, or screen refresh rate.

o MPEG playback is not supported under DOS or WIN-OS/2.

o In OS/2 Warp, video-in recorder cannot be used with the following
applications concurrently, because it may cause the applications
   to hang.

   - Digital video (MPEG playback)
   - Video CD-i player (video CD playback)
   - Digital video (hardware accelerated playback)
   - Video IN recorder (video capture and overlay)

o The enhanced video, such as overlay and capture, and MPEG features
   cannot be used concurrently.

o When using video-in under OS/2 Warp, only "Ultimotion(TM)
Real-Time Compression" can be used as the compression type. Other
compressors are not supported even if they are listed in the
   compression type dialog box.

o MPEG-2 HHR transport stream is not supported under OS/2 Warp
   Version 3.

o MPEG-2 HHR clips cannot be played back properly while attached to
the ThinkPad Dock I or Dock II. You may have frame skip, macro
   block noise, or audio/video asynchronization.

o In some applications, color or brightness differences in the
displayed image between the LCD and CRT may occur when enhanced
video is enabled and video-in is selected. In this case, disable
   enhanced video or select video-out.

o In OS/2 Warp or Windows 95, the call center will not function
   correctly when playing MPEG.

o The MIDI/joystick port on the ThinkPad 760ED cannot be used while
these MPEG options are being used.

o Some types of video CDs are not supported.

MWAVE DSP Limitations

o In OS/2, the concurrent use of digital audio, MIDI, and digital
video applications may show some error message or the function may
   be unstable.

o In WIN-OS/2, FaxWorks Voice sometimes fails to receive if the
   system is in suspend mode.

o Modem, fax, and telephony features do not support PBX.

o Some WAVE audio files cannot be played when using the DSP modem.
This does not occur when using Windows 95.

o MWAVE audio cannot be played when the MWave modem is connected at
28.8 Kbps. This limitation is not applicable to Windows 95.

o Enabling IR on the host system during a co-sessions host session
   is not supported.

o With voice-over-data (VOD), if the MWAVE modem is performing
simultaneous voice and data transmission, the data rate of the
modem is set to 14.4 bps. The VOD program is only supported in
the native Windows and native DOS environments.

o Sending a fax between ThinkPads may be unreliable unless both
systems are at MWAVE Release 2.0.

o MWAVE audio and modem features share the hardware resource of the
MWAVE DSP. This concurrent usage has some restrictions. For
example, while using a 28.8 Kbps modem or while receiving a
fax/voice call, MIDI audio performance may be affected by reducing
the number of MIDI voices or by temporarily suspending MIDI play.
The MIDI play will return when DSP resources become available upon
completion of the modem or fax/voice tasks.

o In OS/2 Warp, using a MIDI application concurrently with the modem
or with digital voice applications requires that the MIDI
application be opened first. Once the modem call is completed or
the digital video application is closed, MIDI play will be
resumed. If after completion of the modem and digital video
tasks, the MIDI play resumes with lesser quality or lower volume,
it may be necessary to rewind the MIDI file or to close and reopen
the MIDI application to restore full MIDI quality.

o In OS/2 Warp, the MWAVE modem does not start automatically. It
   must be started manually.

o For MPEG playback, sampling frequency is 44.1KHz only.

Other OS/2 Limitations

o OS/2 Warp 4 limitations and compatibility statement will be
available on the PC Co. World Wide Web home page by
   October 15, 1996.

o In OS/2, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted
by HPFS on a system that has more than 64MB of memory.

o When a CD-i format CD is in the CD-ROM drive, the system may not
start correctly when using OS/2 Warp. A fix will be provided
   under OS/2 Warp APAR PJ19669.

o OS/2 Digital Video player may fail to play some AVI-format video
   files.

o When a second HDD is in the ThinkPad UltraBay, it cannot be
formatted by the OS/2 Warp FDISK program after being assigned as
the logical drive. A fix will be provided under OS/2 Warp APAR
   PJ19672.

o Some optional features or applications may use the COM1 port.
OS/2 Warp Version 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM1 port is
already in use. Only one such feature or application that uses
the COM1 (for example, communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a
   time.

o The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video
support for Indeo-format video file playback.

Windows NT Workstation Limitations

o In Windows NT 3.51, hibernation is not supported when the drive is
   formatted by NTFS.

Suspend/Resume Limitations

o OS/2 MWAVE audio needs to be stopped before entering suspend mode.

o When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power Management
   (APM) is installed.

o During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 60 mA at 12
   V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60
   mA at 12 V.

o Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.

o If the system is suspended/resumed during the following
operations, unpredictable results may occur. The application
should be closed before entering suspend or hibernation.

   - Audio record
   - Video playback or record
   - Playback of MPEG file, AVI file, video CD, CD-i
   - Active communications in DOS box (modem use) -- application may
      hang
   - DOS games

o In Windows 95, if MWAVE DSP is disabled using the Device Manager,
you can not use the suspend/resume feature.

Other Limitations

o When an external VGA CRT is attached, the display setting in the
ThinkPad setup features must be set to LCD or CRT but not to both.

o A video capture adapter that requires VGA pass-through (video
pass-through, VESA bus) is not supported by the 760E/ED and the
   IBM Docking Stations.

o When SelectaDock Model I is being used with a SCSI driver
installed, suspend/resume function and warm/hot docking are not
supported. The exception is that Windows 95 supports warm/hot
docking even when a SCSI driver is installed.

o When a PCI card or ISA card is being used with a SelectaDock
Model I, suspend/resume is not supported.

o Simultaneous use of IR and other timing-critical or
computation-intensive applications, such as communications and
   multimedia, is not recommended.

o The fixed mode of IR communication should be used only with IR
devices that support only that mode, not with ThinkPad systems.

o The ESS audio device driver is not CID installable.

PCMCIA Limitations

o The ATA PCMCIA card is not supported when using Microsoft Windows
   NT.

o These systems support CardBus PC cards that draw a maximum of 2.64
   watts (0.8 A at 3.3 V DC).

o PCMCIA diagnostics programs usually do not recognize slot numbers
greater than two. To diagnose a suspected faulty card, make sure
the PCMCIA card is in one of the PCMCIA slots of the system
   proper.

o Point enablers usually do not support slot numbers above two. If
using a PCMCIA card with a point enabler, make sure that the card
is in a slot on the system proper.

o PC card point enablers may write directly to the hardware,
bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the
hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also,
point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do
communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer
testing in their specific environments is recommended.

o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the
PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only
   one card to be used.

o Before removing storage PCMCIA PC cards, such as hard disk, flash
memory, or SRAM, the computer must be turned off or the PCMCIA
   slot must be powered off.

Other Tips and Hints

o To support suspend/resume using Dock II, the SCSI IRQ should be
set manually, by using the SCSI option ROM utility, so that it
does not conflict with other device resources.

o Use boot manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive.

o To install OS/2 (OS/2 for Windows or OS/2 Warp) on the 760ED from
CD-ROM versions, the external FDD enclosure (66G3618) is required.

o When an internal CD-ROM drive is used in the 760E or 760ED and the
use of the diskette drive is also desired, the external FDD
enclosure option (66G3618) must be used.

o When using the redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the
HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115 Kbps,
the ThinkPad 760ED should be configured as the requestor.

o Video performance will be reduced when operating under the 64K or
   16M color mode.

o Continuous use of the HDD or CD-ROM drive, such as reading long
video files, will impact battery life. In the ThinkPad 760E/ED,
the use of the enhanced video function will also impact battery
   life.

o The system is designed so the customer can install or remove the
PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card
supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with
   the PCMCIA card.

o The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when
attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external
   input device port.

Security, Auditability, and Control

Standard Security Features for the 9546: The electronic
personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your
name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen
when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is
misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's nonvolatile
memory and is displayed with a password prompt.

Passwords

o A power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized
use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:

   - Each time the system is turned on
   - When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
      mode

o A supervisor password provides a higher level of security than the
POP. The supervisor password protects the system functions from
being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware
configuration from unauthorized modification. The supervisor
password prompt appears when the hardware configuration is
   changed.

o An HDD password (HDP) protects HDD data from unauthorized users.
Once HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the
correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored in the HDD, the data
remains protected even if the HDD is removed to another system.
   The HDP prompt appears:

   - Each time the system is turned on
   - When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
      mode

You can also attach the Kensington lock to the keyhole on the side of
the computer for additional security. This prevents the keyboard
from opening and secures the internal devices under the keyboard.

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
