You could try upgrading the MWave software - the current version is 2.22 (available from ftp.pc.ibm.com in the pcbbs/mobiles dir). You could also try unplugging the phone cable from the computer when this happens - if the tone goes away then it's the modem on the other end doing it. This has happened to me a couple times calling USR modems but it was them doing it. When it happens retrying that could mean you got the same modem again on the other end. > 2.
