This should be working - I used the identical config to install W95's direct
cable connection this morning.

First make sure that your laptop parallel port is correctly configured
(pref. as ECP), and that it has different IRQ and DMA than other devices
you have active (like the modem and sound cards).  Next, make sure the
commands in config.sys and autoexec.bat point to the right place (note
that for Win95, mscdex.exe is actually in windows\command).  Try booting
first into DOS (using the F8 interrupt) - this way you'll know if the
command files are loading properly. 

BTW, I haven't yet decided which is slower, CDLINK or the W95 direct
connect utility, but I *do* know that the former is terribly slow - the
TP uses the 6x CD like a 1.5x drive, according to my testing.  This is
over the ECP port, which in theory should transfer data at 8x rates.
