I had similiar problems on a 755 and a 701 and seemed to be related to
network cards.  If you have a network card these thinkpads shut down more
reliably in Win 95 if I stopped the card first.  This can be done through
clicking on the PC Card icon in the task bar tray and the selecting the
network card.  My problems seem to have went away when I got a newer driver
for the megahertz card.  I have also found that if you get the "Please wait
while your computer shuts down" message and it does not shut down, you can
press CTRL-ALT-DEL and when the close program window comes up select shut
down.  With all its improvements Win 95 is not perfect yet.  At our office
our main application runs on a IBM Clone using SCO UNIX and it can go for
months without needing to be shutdown because software problems.
Eventually Windows should get this reliable.
