The onscreen indicator does change though. Does anyone have the same experience as I do? If not, I think I want to call IBM and have them take care of that.

Well, my does it in MS-DOS, but when I am in Windows or Win95, it would power off the machine. I am suspecting that the little standby battery in the machine is dead but I can't convince IBM tech to admit it. The tech told me that the TP701 can't do battery hot swap when the manual clearly states that it can. I do have a 16MB SODIMM module installed though.

I have had the exact same problem with my 701CS. And oddly enough I got
the same response the first time I called IBM about it. I have sent
mine in twice now and twice it has come back with the problem
unresolved. At first the problem was somewhat intermittent and I was
able to hot swap or perform a non-disruptive battery swap as IBM calls
it, but that was only one or two trys in ten. Now it simply will not do
it at all. I have also developed a new intermittent problem that is
much worse. Ocassionally the machine will power off all by itself, and
this is on AC power so it's not just the battery dying. I called IBM
two days ago to send it in to easyserve for the third time and now I'm
still waiting for the empty box to come. I should note the first time I
sent it in it took almost three weeks to get it back and the problem was
not fixed. The second time it only took three days to get it back, but
again it was not fixed. As you can see I have had some very
inconsistent responses from IBM and this is very unsettling. On the one
hand I love this little machine aside from these problems, but on the
other hand I've not had a very good experience with IBM support. Sure
they're easy enough to get ahold of and they are quick to agree to have
the equipment serviced, but their service leaves a lot to be desired. I
guess the problem is they're just a great big beauracracy and one hand
has no clue what the other is doing. Infact the first time I sent it in
for repairs it sat there for several days because for some reason they
couldn't find the documentation on what was wrong with it and never
bothered to call me to see what the problem was. They just waited for
me to track down the computer and manage to call the right people so I
could explain it all over again. I hope this doesn't discourage you but
I'd appreciate hearing from you if you have better results. BTW I'm not
usually prone to long soap-box ranting like this, but this has really
gotten to be a pain in the neck. I'm told that the machine has to go in
for service four times before they'll replace it. Replace it with what?
The 701's have been discontinued. Will they send me someone else's 701
that couldn't be fixed? I'd prefer to keep my computer if the problem
can be fixed once and for all but they've supposedly replaced the top
and bottom system boards, standby battery, and the modem already and
upgraded my two batteries to Nimh so there's not much of the original
machine left. Of course I have no way of telling if in fact any of
these things aside from the batteries have actually been replaced.
