Greetings:

I have a 701C Thinkpad now and am looking to add another.

What to do ? The applications are:

Desktop replacement / mobile / portable.
ie - the kids have taken over the home pc and I am heading onto the
road to do some consulting - some of which may involve 30 day
          in-the-motel stays.

Some scientific work, mostly word processor / spreadsheet /
office connectivity. Some graphics work. A little programming.
Potential for video conf to home a real plus.

I'd like a new MMX version, but don't have the $$'s and want to move
faster than needed to let the prices settle. I have looked at the current
crop and really like the 760 ED series.

A couple of questions:

1. Does IBM support NT installation on these ? (ie even if you don't buy
NT via IBM ?).

2. If you put the Select a Dock expansion on it, could you disable the
internal video
and use a PCI Video board to drive an external monitor ?

3. How is the memory upgraded - ie how many slots.sockets.
I see IBM saying that it goes to 104 MB, but some others saying less.
Is there 16 mb of memory on the MB or do you have to throw out 8
when you upgrade (I'm thinking 32 should be a good start).

4. Any thoughts on the ability for supporting video conferencing ?

5. Are there any generic problems (HW/SW) withthe ED series ?

I see Barnetts Computer Warehouse 800.931.7070 (212.696.4777 - NYC)
is advertising the 16/2.1 version for $3999.99 in the latest Computer
Shopper (April 1997) page 405.
I called them and they confirmed the price and said they were in stock.
I failed to verify that these were new-in-box and to find if they charged a
surcharge
for credit-card use.

Does anybody have any experience with these people ? A lot of weird
businesses over there, but some good deals too. This is close enough
that I might be forced to abandon my "No-NYC" rule and look them up.

At this price, it looks like a great deal to me in comparison th the
current crop of
$3000 wonders from Dell and all. The internal modem, better screen, longer
warranty and Thinkpad construction are worth the difference to me. The
higher resolution
screen and ability to add (relatively) large amounts of memory tell me it
will keep me
going 3 or more years).

I'd appreciate any thoughts the group has on this deal.
