The only thing I can think of is uneven wear on the spindle bearing
in the disk drive. This was a consideration back in the days of big,
heavy media (the platters on which the magnetic coating lives) and
spindles but doesn't seem like it could be too bad with the dinky
drives now in use. However, it would be a good idea to contact IBM
and inquire about position vs. wear in their drives, as well as
Toshiba and whoever else is making them.
