Hi,

may be that your system is set to use 32 bit drivers.  Had a problem with 
my cdrom(same as yours) not working.  Look under Settings/Control 
Panel/System/Hardware Profile.  Click on the pcmcia device and see if 32 
bit is enabled.  This caused my drive to act as you describe.  Mine now 
says the device is disabled, but it works fine.  

Hope this is not too incomprehensible a description...
