After talking with a couple people, it seems only the airports
I frequent are this strict. Boston, the international terminal
at LAX (I usually fly domestic out of ONT, not LAX), I think
Detroit, and of all places Champaign, IL check for tickets.
They're all pretty strict about it. They won't let you in to
greet or see people off. Except for Ontario, I haven't been
able to go to a gate without a ticket for several years. I
always figured Ontario was lax becuase it was so small. Just my
luck getting stuck with the "secure" airports. I don't even use
a laptop carrying case...
