I disagree. One of my laptops, A P133 Micron, is my main machine for
statistical analysis, and is every bit as fast as the P133 desktop I
occasionally use. I agree that today's laptops are slower than today's
desktops, but they are as fast as last night's desktops.

I don't see anything wrong with this. If you have to travel from A to
B, are bored, and happen to have a computer with you, why *not* use it
to play games? How is this different from doing the crossword in the
paper?

I don't use Mathematica much because it is so slow (even on my Sparc!),
but I regularly use
Maple and S+ on my laptops for serious work. The advantage of keeping a
project on the laptop is that you don't have to keep transferring files
from one platform to another as you move from home to office to
meeting.
Incidentally, while you and I might have several machines, for
many people (especially college undergraduates) the laptop will be the
only machine, and it is entirely reasonable that they try to make them
run as fast as they can - hence this thread.
