Two other causes of the speaker going south are: (1) problems with the
headphone jack.  Try pluging/unplugging/wiggling headphones until you're
sure the jack contacts are returning to speaker mode when the 'phones
are removed.  (2) Problems with the DSP.  Is there sound through
headphones when you plug them in?  If not, then your DSP (rather than
your speaker) is likely the problem.
