Clone Win95 to new HD
hi there,
i do remember this question being asked a couple of times before,
but all my literature and references to the problem are floating
on the atlantic ocean, and i won't get them for a few weeks...
(i'm moving to the states from germany, if it sounds wild...)
i have just been santa-claused with a 540MB harddrive, which is
a noticable improvement over the 340 i've got.
i have also just spent a whole afternoon trying to clone my win95-
setup to the new drive. (it was too muggy outside, and the office
is airconditioned, so it wasn't all that bad)
what is the proper way to do this? i want to avoid setting
everything up again. i have pcmcia-ethernet and enough server-space.
i also have a parallel-port zip-drive, which takes i've sat through
3 transfers of 300MB, and i'm _not_ thrilled.
problems, just to recap:
1) copying under dos or dos-mode i lose the long filenames, but
get registry and such.
the longfilename utility botched it for some reason, the new short
names didn't work out right - what should have been ~1 was ~2 and
so on. also it seemed to need a working w95 - go figure.
2) copying over the net saves long filenames, but i need the w95
system up and running to support the network, not? that i can get
with the zip-drive, but then how do i get rid of the temporarily
installed w95? or can i copy the network-saved system over the
running w95?
maybe a second partition? but i don't want to partition a 540MB
drive - it's not _that_ large...
i do want to mention though that these are the first such problems
i've had with w95; normally i'm quite satisfied.
i may also just live with the small hard drive and use the new, improved
one for linux. soon.
good night,
axel
