560 display slowdown

I just installed Office 97 in my 560 and immediately noticed a latency
delay in the display.  This is true while typing text in the ordinary
way - a slight lag.  It's very apparent during a dial-up networking
session, where 95 displays a dialog box upon connection with the
"minutes and seconds connected".  The seconds do not appear regularly,
but every few digits lag.

The 560 has 40 MB of RAM and is otherwise unexceptionable.  

Any ideas to fine-tune?  It's really annoying....
