Re: Iomega ZIP vs. JAZ

While not a 701 owner, I do have both a Jaz and Zip drive for my TP755 CDV.
I operate them under Win 95 where both work well. I think your choice
depends on planned usage.

The Zip drive can connect through the parallel port and provides nice
capacity for archiving data. As noted, it is quite a bit slower than the
Jaz, but has advantages in portability. ie. you can attach it to any PC to
move files (up to 100 meg) back and forth. Using the Iomega Guest software,
you don't even need to install anything on the other machines.

The Jaz is a SCSI device, hence requires an additional card. I have an
Adaptec PCMCIA card in my TP and the Jaz works great with it. Because it is
much faster than the Zip you can even install and run applications from the
Jaz.

Summary

Zip - has portablility. Slow performance. Good for archiving data and
applications. (100 meg disks).

Jaz - lacks protability. additional card required. Performance good enough
to run applications from it. (1 gig disks).

Incidentally, I would be lost without either.
I also have a 1.3 gig hd as my main drive and the original 810 in the
ultra-bay. The problems of being a software junkie, I guess. :-)

Hope this info is useful

Subject: Iomega ZIP vs. JAZ

Hi,

I'm about to replace the original 360MB drive in my TP701 with a 2.1GB
Toshiba drive. I'd like to buy an Iomega external drive for backup
purposes and I'm hesitating between the ZIP and the JAZ models. Could
owners of either type comment on these devices? Is there any quirk to be
aware of when used with a TP701? Will either model be fully supported
under Warp and Linux?

Everybody seems to be talking about ZIP but JAZ isn't that expensive
anymore (taking the much bigger capacity into account) and it appears to
be quite faster.

Thanks, Dominique
