Sources for ThinkPad 760 2.1GB HDDs
Hello, I'm a grad student in the Computer System Laboratory at
Stanford University. In February, I bought a ThinkPad 760EL from
ReQuest Technology in Palo Alto. It came with Windows 95 on a 1.08GB
hard disk drive. I thought about installing Linux, but kept using
Windows 95 and now my existing HDD's too full to let me install a full
Linux distribution (X, Emacs, TeX, etc.). I'm thinking about buying a
bigger HDD, installing Windows on it, and putting Linux on my existing
1.08GB HDD since Linux isn't as space-hungry as Windows. I've been
checking mail-order prices for 2.1GB drives on some websites and
here's what I've found:
2.1GB HDD: IBM P/N 69H8414
$518 - Procom Technology (ATOM2000TP2U)
$524 - Portable Enhancements (Toshiba slimline 2.1GB in 760 caddy)
$580 - Road Warrior Int'l IBM ThinkPad 760 HDD kit (DKIB760-21R)
$586 - CMS Enhancements 2.0GB Easy Plug-Easy Go (TP760E-2.0)
$615 - Simple Technologies (STM-TP760HD/2100)
$706 - Apricorn (21IBM76)
$725 - Sigma Data (QED/TP760-2.1CD)
$810 - IBM (69H8414)
I don't want to risk buying a drive from one of these non-IBM
companies without as much information as possible. I'd like to appeal
to the ThinkPad mailing list for experiences with any of these
companies. Procom Technology says on its website (www.procom.com)
that they manufacture their own drives, so I have to wonder how
reliable their drives are (I've heard that IBM and Toshiba make the
BEST drives). Sigma Data says on their website (www.sigmadata.com)
that they buy their drives from IBM and IBM will even perform warranty
service on Sigma Data drives just like IBM drives. The carrying case
shown on their website is a nice touch too for people who have to
carry a second HDD around. Still, I'd like to ask people's opinions
of these companies. Or if someone were to offer to sell me a used
2.1GB or 3.0GB HDD in a 760 caddy for the right price, I'd be very
interested. :-) (I'd want to use a third-party intermediary called
Trade-Direct, www.trade-direct.com, to protect myself if I bought a
used HDD from somebody who I didn't know.)
Sincerely yours,
John Interrante
