I have one of these for my 760E -- it's a Dock I -- that I bought from
Surplus direct for $49.99 a while back.
I was not happy with my dealings with Surplus Directs customer service
department. Even though I get their catalog and am on their mailing list I
hesitate to buy from Surplus Direct again.
I'm quite happy with the dock. I really use it as a port replicator with
speakers. I have a 17" monitor set to 1024 x 768 resolution, external
keyboard and mouse, color ink jet printer and a parallel port CD-ROM drive
that I use primarily for installing software. It's nice to be able to
connect all of these at the same time through the docking port.
The only disadvantage is that the Dock I does not support hot or warm
docking. The ThinkPad must be shut down before docking or undocking. I do
not find this onerous.
On advantage of Dock I over a port replicator, besides the available slots
and bays, if you need these, is that the Dock I contains contains charging
circuitry. I often work on my ThinkPad for a couple of hours away from my
desk. I then put the system in the docking station, which automatically
recharges the battery while I do work at my desk.
In fact, I'm so happy with the docking station that I bought a second Dock
I from OnSale for $29.99 a couple of weeks ago.
I would probably like the hot docking capability of the Dock II, which
OnSale is also selling, but I'm not willing to pay an additional $200 to
$300 to get this capability.
