Just bought a 560E with 12.1" TFT screen, 48 MB RAM,
2.1 GB drive for my research group here at Duke
University. It has been set up to run both Win95 and
Linux (Red Hat 4.2) and so far works quite nicely. (For
the curious, I bought the machine fully configured as a
dual-bootable machine from SW Technology, who offer
excellent prices and service for people interested in
Linux.)
Had some questions as a new user:
1. I would like to insure it, especially as a
portable. Inside the 560E box was a card from the
R. C. Knox company, offering three years of
insurance for about $230 (for this particular
model). Does anyone have any comments about this
insurance policy or whether there are other better
alternatives? Has anyone purchased this particular
insurance?
2. The Win95 came loaded with lots of stuff (like the
Lotus Suite) that I have no need for and would like
to delete to free up space. Is there a roadmap
somewhere of what is contained in all the many
preinstalled folders and whether I can safely delete
various folders without affecting the performance of
the machine? I would like to strip the Win95
partition to a minimum and then add back various
applications and data.
Only potential problem I have seen so far is that the
hinges covering the floppy disk port and PCMCIA ports
are cheaply made and look like they will easily break
off. Am surprised that IBM could not engineer a better
solution, e.g., imitate what Micron does on their
Transports in which a port cover simply slides out of
the way, with no easy way for breakage or loss.
Thanks,
Henry
