Yes, DVD drives are capable of reading standard "silver" CD Rom's. The 
first generation DVD drives did have did preclude the user from reading 
"gold" CD-Recordable disks because their lasers had a tendency to rewrite 
data on the disks. I have it from IBM that the 770 will be using a 2nd 
generation DVD drive that will allow the use of CD-R disks.
