There is another "standards" war (besides the Sony/DVD+RW one). A number of film companies, notably
Disney, Universal, and Paramount, had refused to release on DVD because of the ease of
pirating. They've now come up with a new, DES-based encryption standard called DIVX, which must be
integrated into the DVD drive (i.e., new standard, old drives won't work). A DIVX DVD will be
playable for 48 hours. After that period, you can "purchase" additional viewing periods, or convert
the disc to an unlimited time one. This is done, apparently, via a modem connection between the DIVX
player and some central database.

BTW, the Sony DVD+RW standard will be for "naked" discs, no cartridge.
