701C Multiport II mouse

I've been trying to get a mouse to work from the Multiport II,
and basically what I've been plugging in (with an adapter) is
a serial mouse.  

Is that wrong--I have to go out and get a standard ps/2 port 
mouse, which is what Win95 thinks I've got (via the Trackpoint)?

Alternatively I could put the mouse on the Multiport II serial
port and install a driver for it.  The 9.01 driver that came
with the serial mouse is considered deficient by Windows95 and
it says I should get an Intellipoint driver (and presumably 
mouse also).  Does this sound right?
