This does not really address your question as to a FAQ but I can tell you
that I run RedHat 4.2 on my 701c/24mb/75mhz/2.3 gig. 
RedHat had no problem installing (while maintaining a win95 install).
RedHat found the pcmcia controller fine and installed from CD using my
Sony pcmcia cdrom..
