701C modem hangs

The environment: 701C with retail upgrade of Win 95, Plus! dialup IP
support, and level 3O BIOS.
The problem: The modem sometimes stops responding to dialout attempts -
particularly if a connection attempt is stopped while in progress or there
is a problem with the line. At this point it usually takes a power cycle to
restore the modem.
The owner is talking about getting a new machine, but this seems a little
extreme. Is there a less drastic solution?
