Hello, I'm new to this mailing list (sort of). I've got a Thinkpad 340. I
found the computer really hard to use with Windows 3.11 . When I would
upgrade to somthing like a PCMCIA modem, the driver wouldn't work. I was
also having trouble connecting to my new service provider so I had to use
Trumpets Winsock which I really hate. So it was time to upgrade to a new
operating system.
I admire you guys who are still using Windows 3.11, I found it hard to use
in this day and age.
Anyway, I installed Windows 95 from a set of floppies first to be sure my
computer would handle it. I was told the computer would be really hard to
use because it would be so slow (only 4 megs) . Boy was it!
So I installed an 8 MEG upgrade card. This has helped tremendously. Although
it is not as fast as my desktop I am wondering if I can speed it up a bit.
Here's what I have upgraded it to (and other specs) as of now:
12 MEG Ram total
28.8 PCMCIA modem
Windows 95
The hard drive is aparantly 120 MEG. Windows 95 is a hard drive hog so I
have about 25 MEG to spare as of now.
The microprocesser is a 25/50. This was explained to me but how to I know if
I am running in 50 MHZ mode?
Also has anyone had any luck using DriveSpace? One guy told me not to use it
because he did and it screwed his Packard Bell desktop up. But another guy
said if I compressed my hard drive it would speed the computer up and he has
had good luck with it.
I'm kind of weiry about using compression programs. Has Anybody had any luck
using DriveSpace? Has Anybody had any problems using it?
I would really like to avoid using it for fear it might mess something up
but my hard drive is close to getting Maxed out.
Is the small space left on the HD really slowing the computer down?
Also how to I upgrade to 50 MHZ and how do I tell if I am running in 25 MHZ
mode?
Under performance my computer says : 80486
Also the battery is stone dead. Is there any harm of leaving it in there? I
know charging a dead battery on a car will make it swell and leak. Is there
any chance of this happening on my Thinkpad? I always use it when I am near
a phone jack and electrical outlet so I really don't need a battery. Does
IBM or anybody else make a "Dummy" battery which fits in place of the
battery? For this reason I leave the computer upplugged when I am not using
it. I tried charging it for 10 hours the other day and it still won't hold a
charge.
Thanks.
