The IBM press release dated 15 Oct 97 discussing 3 billion bits per
square inch and drives at that density had the following:

"Availability date for OEM customers:  December 97" when discussing the 8GS.

also:

"Travelstar 8GS will be available during the first quarter of 1998 as a
stand-alone
option for select notebook computers"

The OEM part number appears to be DYLA-28100 for the 8GS and DYLA-2480 for
the 6.48
GB version (4 platters instead of 5).

I'm also interested if you find the IBM part number or FRU number and also
if they
will work in older (76X) Thinkpads.  The 5 GB ones do with an appropriate BIOS
upgrade.
