This is a software driver issue, not a hardware issue.

I have been using all sorts of CDs on my TP760EL (including LST, Caldera
etc.) so the problem must be with the CD or some manufacturing tolerance of
either CD or the CDROM drive. In general, these CDs are just fine with the
CD drive.
Me at your place, I'd not use Slackware but another distribution like Red
Hat. Perhaps they make better CDs too. There are too many el-cheapo-cheapo
Slackware CDs around...
