It's interesting that this topic should come up because a few months
ago I asked the tech who works for me about the exact same
thing. Here's a paraphrase of what he told me:
Under lower light conditions, especially, the refresh of a LCD is
more noticeable (there is less visual noise). This combines with
small drops in amperage (from anything happening on the machine) which
can cause an almost imperceptible dimming of the screen. The drop in
amperage comes from a battery's ability to supply only so much (and
even when charging, most laptops pull current pass through their
battery). The two events happening together cause this very common
phenomenon.
Hope this helps (make you feel better at least). I would guess any
severe flickering you see would be cause for a trip to the shop.
