Basically. It is almost the lowest common denominator for parallel
port transfer modes. SPP is the safest, and also the slowest.

Some peripherals will not get along with the faster modes. Try the fast
settings and if it works for you leave it that way. Use the fastest mode
that all your peripherals support. I can't tell you which is best for
you. Try the fastest mode and if it everything works leave it that way.
If it doesn't work back it down to the next slower mode and try it again.
Almost everything should work in SPP mode if you are paranoid and don't
need speed. I use ECP mode on my TP560-120 without any problems, but I
also don't hook much up to the parallel port besides an external
IDE<->parallel adapter. I print through my network.

FWIW I have an ancient Epson ES-300C scanner that will not work on many
parallel ports. It refused to work with the port on my last motherboard,
or with a dedicated fancy dual parallel port card. It does work fine with
a plain parallel port adapter made in '82 or so. I now just run it off a
SCSI adapter, but it is a good example of parallel port compatibility
quirks.
