The best answers are either "read the docs for everything you have and
pick the fastest mode everything supports" or "try it and see what
happens." It's not as if trying the faster modes will hurt anything.

Yup. Standard Parallel Port. It the lowest and slowest and most
compatible of them all. I get a little over 100K/sec with my external
IDE<->parallel drive using SPP mode and over 800K/sec using ECP. SPP runs
it fine, but a 1x CD-ROM can out-run it.
