In fact the external bays are one of the huge improvements in the 770 design.
Very well designed. No more fiddling with raising the keyboard and struggling
(the designs in which you had to remove the CD ROM to change the battery were
particularly ludicrous).

Now there is a nice lever in front to eject the battery from the left, or 
whatever is in the ultrabay from the right.

Absolutely ZERO possibility of one of these sliding out on its own.

What is particularly nice is that it is easy to change batteries, and given
that you can put a battery in each side, you can very easily change one while
the machine is running on the other.

I actually don't know how to remove the first hard drive, never needed to,
and so have not bothered to learn how, but it certainly has shown no sign of
falling out!
