These days, 16MB counts as very small RAM, not "a lot of RAM". Personally,
it seems strange to me to spend thinkpad type money and then starve the 
machine for memory. I think you do better to buy a less powerful machine
with decent memory than a more powerful one that is starved. THese days
32M is an absolute reasonable minimum. Check out the prices on memory
upgrades, they have got MUCH cheaper. I bought 64meg chips for my 770
from Kingston (certainly a high quality supplier) for $320 a piece.
