USR, maker of x2 technology, have promised free upgrade paths to the new
standard. Theoretically, that means that neither existing standard is
obsolescent, because both are upgradeable at no charge. 

My sense is that if you own a USR x2 you're in good shape, because of their
flash-ROM capability, meaning you should be able to accomplish the upgrade
over a telephone line. On the Rockwell side, though, I believe there are
some modems where hardware would have to be swapped out, and that could get
problematic.
