For those of us who do not have a notebook with Pentium 166+ MHz
processor plus some 40 MB of memory (required for IBM ViaVoice) or
a 133+ MHz processor plus 32 MB of memory (required for Deagon Sys
Naturally Speaking), one of the few options for voice recognition
(conversion of spoken words into typed text or control of windows)
is IBM VoiceTYPE Dictation 1.32 software. This package currently
lists with INTERNET voice recognition vendors just under $1,000.
I have a copy of IBM VTD 1.32, the PCMCIA VTD speech adaptor, and
a Shure SM-10 headset/boom microphone which I originally purchased
for use on my old IBM Thinkpad 750Cs 486SL-33MHz notebook. I sold
the notebook over a year ago. But, the buyer wasn't in the market
for a voice recognition system. So, if anyone is interested in a
voice recognition system for a notebook with 486 25+ Mhz processor,
12 MB memory, and 33 MB disk, I would be interested in selling the
software CD, PCMCIA card, and microphone for $200 plus shipping.
I also have a copy of IBM VTD 3.0 (current list $665) which requires
a 90 MHz pentium with 256K L2 cache, 16MB RAM, 30MB disk, and either
MWAVE or Sound Blaster 16 (or 100% compatible) sound card for sale
-- also $200 plus shipping.
I personally enjoyed using both of these products on slower notebooks
-- experiencing a phenomenal 95% to 97% recognition accuracy after
"enrollment" (providing a required speech sample to the software) and
a few days dictation. I am now experimenting with continuous speech
recognition system on a higher speed notebook -- so I am selling both
of my two previous discrete speech recognition systems.
