Running Linux and X-windows on a Thinkpad 760E

Hi,

I have installed Linux (redhat 5.0) on my IBM
Thinkpad 760E. After some effort, I got X to
run, but I have the following behavior:

* when I run X, I get a black screen with just
  the icons displayed, with sometimes only a
  small rectangle that gets refreshed (and where
  everything happens as expected).

* If I start Windows 95, reboot into Linux and
  run X, then things work fine.

Has anybody come across this problem? Any idea
about how to initialize the screen before running
X so that I don't have to go through Windows all
the time?

        Thanks in advance,

                Iliano.
