Odd problem.  Have you tried to cycle the video mode 
manually.  When the X server starts up, hit 'CTRL'-'ALT'
-'+'.  You have to use the grey, numberpad '+' and the right
'CTRL' and 'ALT' if memory serves right.

Do you have a plug and play video card?  Maybe you should 
try out the isapnptools-1.11.tgz.  It is a pnp manager
that allows you to do some pretty interesting things with 
plug and play hardware (like disable it ;-) ).
