[TP560] Video drivers - warning!

The other day I installed the most recent video (10-97) drivers for my system
(TP560,P133/DSTN). While only a month more recent than the ones I already
had, it had been suggested that reinstalling video might eliminate the
freeze-ups the machine has been prone to since I upgraded to the latest
version of IE4, and I figured I should get the latest. (BTW, this *does*
seem to have helped the system hangs.)

The new drivers offered, among other things, a choice of 640x480 16 bit
graphics. Stupidly, I thought I'd give this a try (even though I didn't
believe it was possible). MISTAKE! When I selected these the screen became
unreadable, even on rebooting. In W3.1 you can run the 'setup' program from
DOS to change back to generic VGA, but - as far as I can tell - this doesn't
exist in W95. Fortunately, I know enough about the registry that I was able
(in DOS) to create a registry script (with a text editor) to change back to 8
bit resolution, and import it using the DOS version of regedit.

Now, some questions: (1) If it doesn't work, why is this option included?
(2) Is there any way to keep it from showing up when you right-click on the
display icon in the system tray? (3) What *is* this machine's max color
depth, anyway? I'd always thought 8 bit, but if you do a video test in the
bootup self-test some of the modes displayed are said to be 16- and 24- bit
by the test program.
