Enough has probably been said on this, but I'll toss in my
2 cents since I tend to do more answering than asking on this
list.
My mail program can't view HTML attachments. The mail program
that comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer claims to send a
text version (labeled ASCII) and an HTML version (labeled HTML).
The ASCII version isn't - I suspect it includes some binary
characters which pine doesn't like and I end up with an "unable
to view non-ASCII text" error.
The end result is that I don't bother reading any messages that
come through formatted like that. I just delete them rather
than go through the gymnastics of saving it to a file and
viewing it later. Every once in a while I'll send a message
telling people about the problem (this is one of them :-). It's
up to them to configure their mail program to send plain text
only. If they don't/can't, I don't read their messages, and
hence don't answer their questions.
If they do get it configured correctly, I'd also recommend they
send a message to Microsoft asking to fix this bug (how hard can
ASCII be?), and perhaps having MS IE default to sending plain
text instead of the weird text/HTML hybrid.
