fixed 701 crack
Spent this weekend fixing the crack in the lid of my 701. It was pretty
easy to do, and seems to be real strong. I am including a description of
the methods I used in case anyone is interested.
First, I removed the bezel by taking out the torx screws. Bezel also has
some plastic tabs holding it down, which can be freed by spreading the
bezel away from the lid.
Flopped the LCD down so the Lid was empty.
Put a drop of plastic weld on the crack. I used something called Tenax-7R.
Its about the consistancy of acetone, and is full of nasty chemicals that
disolve the plastic. That fixed the crack, but I figured it would break
again, so I reinforced the area.
I cut some fiberglass cloth into strips about 1 x 3. The glass was about
like tissue paper, not the heavy stuff. put a strip down on the crack and
wet it with the Tenax. Pressed it into the plastic case.
Slapped on a strip of .006 thick stainless steel. Not sure this was
needed, but it seemed perfect for the job. Used some Tenax to hold it in
place. It was about .25 x 2 inches. Then Used some Kwik Bond 1 ( ACC glue)
to secure it. Added another layer of fiberglass. Used Kwik bond on this
too. This is very watery, so It soaked in good. The Q-tip I was using
started smoking during this, I guess from the large surface area of the
cotton reacting with the glue.
Added a final layer of glue and glass.
Used a belt sander to lightly thin the bezel plastic to clear the patch.
This all only took about an hour, and the finished patch was thin enough
I am not sure the thinning out step was even necessary.
Can't be sure it will hold over the long run, but It seems real strong
and now the case doesn't feel mushy and grunch against the bezel when I
pick the thing up.
