Peter,
I won't be able to do anything "real-time," but that
shouldn't dissuade you... and you'll appreciate savings
on your 'phone bill!
First, a little info:
--Mwave modems will likely never work.
--A "total Linux" TP will be soundless; you need
at least some sort of DOS-like partition to load
the DOS/WIN only Mwave DSP drivers.
I find little use for sound while working with my computer.
I should say, sound _from_ my computer! So this was merely
an exercise for me... I mean, like, what... boot windows
to boot linux! Horrors! Plus, the "sound" kernel cannot
have any APM features, and I like to have the box power-off
when I shut down. So what I have is "sound-on-APM-off" for
one kernel, and a "sound-off-APM-on" kernel.
My kernel build is for RedHat, not Caldera; however, I am
attaching my X server config file, which may help with
the graphical. With RedHat Linux, this file is in "/etc/X11."
It's called "XF86Config." With it, all I have to do is
enter "startx -- -bpp 16" and get 16bit 1024x768. I don't
use other resolutions.
So,
at your prompt, type "ls /etc/X11"
If you get a list of files, that's part of the task.
Do you see the "XF86Config" file?
Now, type "which xf86config"
Did you get a line reading something like
"/usr/bin/X11/xf86config" ?
BTW-it'd be best if you were logged in as "root" to do this!
If you did, e-mail and tell me. If you didn't... well
I can't really suggest what to do, because I don't
know what Caldera might have done with X11. Here are a few
URLs
http://www.zebra.fh-weingarten.de/~kaufmann/laptop/welcome.html

http://www.muc.de/~hm/linux/thinkpad.html
http://www.screamin.demon.co.uk/mwave.html
http://www.mindspring.com/~jhind/tplinux/
Two disclaimers:
The attached "XF86Config" file may damage your computer LCD!
DO NOT use it unless you assume full responsiblity for such
use. I don't use it on a ThinkPad 770. I do not claim that it
will work on any system, but my own.
It is said that the fault of UNIX based OS's is the lack of
standardization. However, UNIX based OS's run on more types
of hardware configurations than does any other OS. There may
not be a standard UNIX, but so to, lack's a standard computer
hardware!
