My office has three 760CD Thinkpads, on which we run a variety of
operating systems, including Warp 4 and Windows95. Most systems are set
up with OS2's Boot Manager. In all cases, BIOS level is up to date.
We have gradually updated the models, adding to memory and installing
larger hard drives. We have now brought three of them up to 64 MB, by
installing 2 x 32 SIMM's (DIMM's?) from Apricorn. We now find that we
cannot boot up Windows95.
The symptom is that Win95 starts to boot, but just before it begins to
paint its screen, the screen becomes filled with garbage. This extreme
video corruption persists, requiring a hard shutdown.
All systems are running the current version of the Cyber9320 video
driver. They all worked before we added the second 32 MB. Furthermore,
if we swap out one of the 32 MB and replace it with a 16 MB, they will
work. It is only the combination of 2 x 32 MB that fails. We have tried
moving the memory around, swapping from system to system, trying just one
SIMM, running startup tests, and so on. In all cases, the memory and
display test out OK, but the combination of 2 x 32 fails. The system
will boot if we boot in safe mode and change video to plain VGA or
Trident SVGA.
Curiously, OS2 boots just fine.
Since this behavior persists consistently on three different 760CD's, I
have to conclude that there is a serious problem here. Can anyone please
give me some guidance on how to get this thing working, or let me know if
this is a known problem and we can't???
Thanks!
