Re: THINKPAD 535E AND MWAVE QUESTION
Often, when there is a problem with the Mwave modem, it is because the ISP is
using a particular brand and model of a digital portmaster... I have looked
into this extensively to know that it is a problem... but we haven't yet
resolved why... whether the problem is because the technician at the ISP
doesn't know how to properly set up the portmaster, whether the digital
portmaster has some quirks, or whether it has more to do with the phone
company...
In our part of the world, it appears to be a problem between US West's
peculiar way of connecting T-1's and its channelized brothers combined with
the portmaster (whose manufacturer I cannot mention due to pending
litigation).
So you might want to determine first if your ISP connection is using a digital
portmaster connected to a channelized T-1 or a regular T-1.
This problem does not exist with very many modems... MWave, some Lucent
Technologies, and some Logicode that I know of.
It cannot be fixed, apparently, but if you can connect to a fast analog
portmaster or a Courier modem, your problems will be less severe.
